Welcome to the Community Diner- Dedicated to the Senior

A Safe Place for Adults Approaching Retirement, Senior Citizen, and Retirees

Boardwalk

Times are changing and seniors are getting more computer savvy. However, many of the young web developers out there ignore this demographic. This is unfortunate, because as they say “Older is wiser.” With that in mind and thinking about my own family, I decided to dedicate a site to older adults, retirees, and our beloved seniors.

My wife and I always love a good local community diner. The regulars at those diners and social aspect of a local diner are what inspired us to recreate that atmosphere online. Our goal is to provide a safe place where everyone can gather and talk about financial information, investment advice, retirement, traveling, camping, RV-Camping, and any other relevant topics. Our discussion forum is the only part of this site that will require a log-in (eventually) for regular site visitors to see content. This will only be implemented to avoid spam and unwanted guest on our forum. However, we do recommend registration to enjoy all the features of this site.  There is the ability to expand and create a social network type atmosphere in the future.

My hope is that we’ll get some experienced veterans of the senior community that can help others who are approaching retirement. We’ve all made mistakes. However, we can learn from others and avoid that rocky road life sometimes brings us. Beyond money, retirement, and traveling, we also hope the Community Diner can become a place where we go to talk to others about health related issues, deaths in the family and our own mortality.

We’ll be looking for forum moderators who want a place to call home and help provide a safe place for everyone to visit. Moreover, there is a wealth of knowledge in our older online community just waiting to be shared. Share your advice, your stories, and a few jokes with us. Do you like the write? You could have your own regular blog column like Two Cents Worth. Moreover, we’re open to your suggestions regarding how we add content to the site and what features you would like to see. Sign up with our forum and become a Community Diner member. Help us create that community atmosphere everyone loves with people from all over the country.

If you own or manage an accounting firm, finacial advisor, retirement community, or diner please add your site to our resources section. All sites or businesses are reviewed before final submission.

    • Often Overlooked
Community_Diner Often Overlooked It’s no secret that in today’s shallow world of fashion, movies, and TV, that youth is glorified. People spend tens of thousands of dollars on plastic surgery to stay young looking. However, seniors are starting to get recognized. Whether it’s the aging gracefully Sally Fields on the hit TV show Brothers and Sisters, or Bob Lutz as executive of GM, who at age 77, besides working with GM, still flies his jet; being a senior no longer means being out of the limelight of life. Let’s face it, people are living longer. The tech world, however, is a different story. There are very few useful sites created for seniors that aren’t attached to a federal website. This was an obstacle I ran into when developing the Community Diner. Finding content geared toward seniors is difficult to say the least. I remember bring up this concept among a group of developers. The attitude came off as “We would rather work on something that interests us.” I felt differently, knowing all too well that some of America’s smartest people are fifty and older. Is that not interesting enough? Surely they have stories to share and lessons to be learned. Right now the youth of this country still dictates what technology gets developed. This holds true for the web development community also. Older Americans have become more computer savvy in recent years. Many have had to head online for news as many local newspapers have dried up. In addition, many have learned that computers are a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, without the high cost associated with phone and mail. I believe that over the next ten years, our aging population will play a powerful role in technology. It’s a demographic that deserves to be heard and will. If we could only take all of our smartest programmers off video game development and transfer that creative spirit to projects that help develop high quality interactive websites and sites that are geared toward a wider range of the population. Granted, there is lots of talent out there in all fields. However, some of our best and brightest have devoted themselves to a narrow segment of the population completely overlooking our countries growing need for diverse technology.
    • Reality check
Community_Diner I remember growing up; we didn’t have nearly as much as today. Not compared to today’s standards anyway; one TV maybe two if you were lucky and one was black and white. The generation before us had even less. A new car was like a celebration. People would show them off as though they won the lottery. Now people get new cars every few years if not sooner. In addition, we not only have more than one TV, but some have 50 inch screens with surround sound. Our expectations grew bigger than our pay checks. As a result, no we're paying the price. No politician has full control over that. Moreover, they are worse at spending our money than we are. I think we’re now paying the price for over expecting. Now reality is setting in. Granted, the economy WILL turn around. Things will improve. However, the days of unfettered growth may be a part of history, but no longer part of our future. It’s tough to expect car companies to meet CAFÉ standards at the same time they are going belly up. In addition, it’s tough to expect our government to provide health care when we are trillions of dollars in debt. Granted, these are all important issues, but something has to give. This isn’t to say I’m not optimistic about the future. However, I believe the future will less about growth and more about quality; the quality of career, job, home, retirement, and life in general. That isn’t such a bad thing. However, it is a tough transition and there will be pain along the way. I think we need to think in terms of years and not quarters on our road to recovery. Maybe America will get back to building good products and worry less about shareholder value. Maybe we’ll appreciate that new car if it only comes every five to ten years. Maybe the environment will be better off. On the other hand, we may wallow in mediocrity for decades. The only thing I know for sure is that “we the people” control our future. No one politician or one political establishment can be a cure all for all of our problems.
    • Welcome to the Community Diner
Community_Diner Welcome to the Community Diner. Our goal is to provide a safe online home for older adults, retirees, and senior citizens. In addition, we would like to be a social network where people can get advice on retirement, financial, savings, vacation destinations, and RV-Camping. As time progresses, we will provide information on other topics. I hope our visitors will help guide our content in a direction that interests themselves and their friends or family. However, what we hope to achieve most of all is to provide a place people feel comfortable to talk about anything whether good or bad. Sometimes sharing bad news with others helps us get through our toughest times. On the other hand, sharing good news helps make that news just a bit more special. ;)
    • Hello from Lou
Community_Diner My name is Lou and I'm the founder of Community Diner. I've been designing websites since 1995. In recent years I felt there were far too few sites dedicated to older adults. As a result, I created the Community Diner as a place where older adults, retirees, and seniors can come together online and socialize. My personal interest include collecting diecast toy cars, old 50's style diners, working on my home, and playing with my two golden retrievers. My wife Jenny and I have been married six years and together eight. We plan on adopting our first child in the next few years. To start out, the Community Diner forum will be open to guest. However, I urge everyone who wants to call this site home, to register. Eventually, the forum will be member only. This will simply be to keep out unwanted post. I urge everyone to read post carefully and NEVER give personal information to anyone new on this site. Wait until you are comfortable with people before exchanging personal information. I'm hoping to get some moderators who can help me keep things interesting and safe on this forum. Anyone who is interested, please register for the forum and email me at nothingbutthenet@yahoo.com . Over time, I'll add new moderators to the site. The Community Diner and it's forum cost nothing to join. We hope to generate enough revenue through our sponsors to pay for the hosting cost. As a result, the only thing visitors need to do, is to enjoy our site and help us improve it. Thanks for your time, Lou :)
