A few easy ways to make any website easier to read

The Community Diner wants to be sure all viewers have access to our website. There are ways to code a website to ensure visitors can adjust font sizes and or image sizes. However, with a dynamic website this can be quite trying and unreliable. For example, some text and some images resize and some won’t. In addition, resizing only the fonts can create an even more eligible document. For note, dynamic websites are those that include social networking, forums, polls, and other user interactive features. As a result, I recommend taking advantage of Internet Explorer or Firefox’s ability to zoom in or out of any page. The browser of your choice may also offer this feature. This option resizes the entire size, which keeps everything in proportion while allowing the viewer to read text easier and get a closer look at images. Both the newest versions of IE and Firefox can page zoom two ways.

1. First way- Go to the top of your browser window and check the dropdown menu for “View” and click it. Scroll down and you will see a “Zoom” option. From there, in Firefox the options are Zoom In, Zoom Out, or Reset (Back to normal). In IE you have the option of Zoom In, Zoom Out, or various sizes anywhere from 50%-400%. IE also gives these options in the bottom right hand corner of your browser window.

2. Easier way- For either Internet Explorer (IE) or Firefox, simply hit the control button and either + or (plus or minus) on your keyboard to increase to decrease the page size. Hit control 0 (zero) on your keyboard to reset your screen back to normal size.

The Community Diner highly recommends downloading the latest browser version. This not only increases your web surfing security, but also gives you more access to the latest accessibility features. Moreover, many newer websites won’t display properly in earlier browser versions.

Download Firefox here:

I personally recommend one of the two I mentioned above, because they are tested and updated regularly for security and accessibility concerns. I have them both installed and use them for different reasons. Your browser choice may differ, as there are other options available, but it’s still important to keep your browser up-to-date!

If you have any trouble reading a portion of our website and would like it translated into a larger font or image size, we will do so at no cost to you. Simply contact us and we’ll create either a Microsoft Word or PDF document with a larger font size for you. We can also increase the size of some images and email those to you as well.

Please include as much information about the page in question as possible, by either including the URL in your email or giving us a description of the page. Please specify your document of choice (Microsoft Word or PDF).

Thanks for your time,
